How much do ChatGPT Ads cost? CPC, CPM, budgets and billing

What advertising on ChatGPT costs: CPM and CPC buying, the suggested starting bid, minimum daily budgets by currency, and how OpenAI charges your card.

The short answer

ChatGPT Ads cost what you bid, up to the budget you set. There is no rate card and no monthly fee to OpenAI. The price of each impression or click is decided in an auction among the ads eligible for that conversation.

What OpenAI does publish is the frame around that auction: how you can buy, a suggested starting bid, a minimum budget, and when your card is charged. Everything in this guide comes from OpenAI's own help pages.

Three ways to buy

Your campaign objective fixes the pricing model, and it cannot be changed after the campaign is created.

  • Views (CPM). You pay per 1,000 impressions served. Best for visibility.
  • Clicks (CPC). You pay per valid click. Best for sending people to your site.
  • Conversions. Delivery is optimized toward one conversion event you choose, but you still pay per valid click (oCPC) or per 1,000 impressions (oCPM). You are never billed per conversion.

For most lead-generation advertisers, Clicks is the easiest place to start, because cost maps directly to visits you can measure.

How much to bid

Bids are set at the ad-group level as a maximum CPC or maximum CPM. For CPC campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of 3 to 5 US dollars per click. Ads Manager may also show bid-strength guidance telling you whether a bid is likely to compete or to limit delivery.

Eligible new ad groups can use Maximize results, which sets bids automatically to get as many results as possible from the budget. It does not guarantee a cost per click or cost per result.

The auction is relevance-weighted and second-price. Relevance and bid both count: a well-matched ad can win without the top bid, and in a second-price format the price is set by the competition rather than by your maximum alone. A weak match cannot simply be bought through with money.

Minimum budgets

Every campaign needs a budget, either daily or campaign-total. OpenAI's minimum daily budget depends on your ad account's billing currency. A few examples from its table:

  • 25 USD
  • 15 EUR
  • 15 GBP
  • 20 CHF
  • 25 CAD or 25 AUD
  • 150 MXN
  • 60 ILS

Your billing currency is chosen when you open the account and cannot be changed later, so the minimum you face is fixed from day one.

How daily budgets actually spend

A daily budget is not a same-day cap. It is an average over a week that runs Sunday to Saturday in your account's time zone. On a single day spend can reach up to twice the daily amount, but across the week it never exceeds seven times it. Unused budget early in the week can be spent later in the same week.

A campaign-total budget is the stricter control if you need a hard ceiling. You can change the amount of either budget, but not the type, so pick the right one at creation. OpenAI recommends new advertisers start with a daily budget and watch delivery first.

When you are charged

Billing is postpay. As ads deliver, spend accrues on your account. A self-serve card is charged each time unpaid spend reaches your account's payment threshold, or at the end of the month, whichever comes first.

The threshold starts low and may rise automatically with a good payment history. It is not a budget and not a spending cap, and OpenAI support will not change it for you. When you add a card, your bank may show a temporary authorization hold that is released later.

Two reporting details save panic: clicks and impressions refresh about every 15 minutes, but spend can lag seven to eight hours. A spend of zero in the morning does not mean nothing was charged.

What determines your real cost

Your bid sets a ceiling. What you actually pay per result depends on how well your ad fits the conversation, which ad groups and context hints you use, how competitive your category is, and how well your landing page converts. Those are the levers to work on, and they are why the same budget can produce very different results for two advertisers.
